AiBiBank: Bio-Banking and Artificial Intelligence for the fight against cancer

A research project creating a bio-bank to train artificial intelligence algorithms and support fight against cancer.

Approach & Solution

Approach

AiBiBank is a research project creating a bio-bank to train artificial intelligence algorithms and support fight against cancer. It fits into the context of predictive diagnostics and precision medicine by integrating bio-technology and clinical and IT skills.

In the countries of the OECD area, cancer is the second leading cause of death. In Italy every day more than 1,000 new cases are diagnosed. Early diagnosis, that is the identification of the disease before it manifests itself, is fundamental. It is time that the one-size-fits-all screening approach, in which everyone takes the same test starting from the same age and with the same interval, is replaced by a personalized screening approach.

Considerable progress has been made in early diagnosis, but there is still a long way to go, to recognize a larger number of cancers and to distinguish between aggressive froms from indolent ones.

Solution

We have created a data lake to collect and organize medical images and anonymized clinical data. The system also allows researchers to define patient cohorts and download datasets of interest.

This system can be used for the development of Artificial Intelligence algorithms to support clinical decision-making. In particular, within the AiBiBank project, breast cancer screening and prostate oncology are addressed.

The project is carried out by a consortium of private partners and hospital entities, funded by the POR FESR Piedmont 2014-2020 - Axis I - Action I.1b.2.2.
