Approach

The COVID-19 outbreak clearly demonstrated the need for many industrial sectors to be able to react quickly and be flexible enough in responding to unforeseen changes in the environment and to cope with related peaks in the demand of particular products, such as medical supplies.

The concepts of repurposing and reconfiguration are not new in manufacturing and recent Industry 4.0 paradigms, technologies and standards have augmented the capacity of manufacturers to react quickly to different events and changes. Still, the COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the need for further improvements in such capability.

Solution

In order to achieve its ambitious goals, Eur3ka brings together a consortium of 26 partners of excellence from 12 countries, coordinated by Engineering.

The results will be achieved by leveraging Industry 4.0 standards, industrial international common data space enablers and digital infrastructures. Eur3ka will also support the upgrade of global on-demand and manufacturing as-a-service platforms through connected and smarter supply networks and global medical supplies, as well as equipment repositories.

Among the main project objectives are the realization of a Plug & Respond (P&R) repurposing resource coordination framework to ensure business continuity and effectiveness in pandemic crisis response; an architecture with common open manufacturing standards; strong links among global manufacturing capabilities, supply chains and medical knowledge.
