Copenhagen Metro:
New control systems for a driverless subway

Collaborating with Leonardo and Salini Impregilo, we provided monitoring and control systems for Cityringen, the new driverless M3 metro line in the city of Copenhagen.

Approach

The new driverless metro line of the city of Copenhagen - which is called Cityringen, according to its circular shape - is a construction based on high innovation and cutting edge technology, made of 17 stations, 5 shafts (for emergency escape) and a depot.

The new M3 line supports the existing M1 and M2 lines and is an answer to the growing global mobility need of Copenhagen, a capital which is expanding more and more.

Engineering, with its expertise gained on two other metro lines, previously realized, has efficiently participated to the development of its infrastructure, fully adhering to highly stringent performance and safety requirements, and providing a robust solution fitting the challenging context.

Solution

The project has been carried out by Engineering, developing a customized software solution to monitor and control field devices for each peripheral site. The solution is based on hardware products belonging to ControlLogix PLC area, provided by Rockwell - a leader in the field of automation.
The hardware and software peripheral systems we developed have been then integrated with the central SCADA monitoring system, allowing operators to efficiently and easily manage the metro line.

We also ensured the security of our software by developing it according to methodologies compliant to SIL1 safety standards, as defined by the current European railway regulations.
