Robotic Process Automation

Five questions to...
Danilo Valdati

Engineering D.HUB Sales Specialist tells us how Intelligent Automation creates a new alliance between technology and man. Guaranteeing efficiency, productivity and quality even in the most critical situations.

1.

WHAT IS RPA?

Robotic Process Automation is a methodological tool that allows you to create "software robots": digital workers who can implement, imitate and optimise the application activities performed by human users from their PCs.

By applying the rules and operating conditions to a smart workflow, this digital link can interact with any software application, any database, the web, 3270 terminal masks, and back-end systems. It basically provides a blank sheet to design RPA workflows that span all the applications of a given company, institution or organisation.

2.

COVID HAS PROMPTED COMPANIES TO ACCELERATE THE DIGITALISATION PROCESS. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RPA IN THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION RACE? AND HOW CAN IT HELP COMPANIES ESTABLISH A NEW NORMAL TODAY WHEN THE CRISIS IS NOT OVER YET?

In the near future, RPA will open up a new and more agile approach to modelling application processes and work organisation for companies, institutions and organisations. It will also allow for greater efficiency, productivity, quality, knowledge maintenance and process innovation, "debureaucratising" and simplifying procedures. Furthermore, it will bridge technological gaps between what you want to do and what you can actually do using as-is systems.

Introducing RPA in a competent and structured manner will help to resolve critical operational situations, eliminating/reducing the need for on-site personnel.

The crisis has triggered a technological leap that could provide significant value for businesses. RPA enables Digital Transformation and helps to create a new alliance between technology and humanity, giving organisations an edge in even the most critical situations, such as the pandemic. Today, there is a growing recognition of the value of RPA and its role in the next technological renaissance.

3.

IN WHICH SECTORS CAN RPA PROVIDE MEANINGFUL ADDED VALUE AND WHICH SECTORS HAVE YET TO TAP INTO ITS TRUE POTENTIAL?

As a comprehensive methodology, RPA truly has no limits. Applications are proliferating quickly and integrating less and less smoothly with existing systems. RPA facilitates automation, creating an efficient link between technology and users in any sector and any setting, including the front and back office.

RPA is fast, accurate, intuitive and practical.

To make it a real accelerator in the Digital Transformation of their company, CEOs must believe in its potential and, most importantly, create an internal governance team and continuously pass on feedback and KPIs regarding the digital processes, thereby ensuring viral sharing throughout the entire organisation.

4.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING'S APPROACH TO THIS TECHNOLOGY?

The company's approach reflects the beliefs and values described above. In these pioneering years, we have gained experience, pragmatism and a rational understanding through both individual RPA projects and extended introductory RPA programmes, which have offered a profound insight into the topic, allowing us to exploit its most disruptive yet interesting features and, most importantly, learn how to manage a pool of robots.

These are the core values that we share with every customer throughout every RPA initiative, large or small. These values are reflected in our RPA methodology, now mature and robust, which has earned us COE status and international recognition of our team's talents. Our COE guides customers through the new experience of robotic process automation, driven by the primary objective of improving the human dimension of work, thereby ensuring user satisfaction and optimising business performance and results.

5.

WE ARE WITNESSING THE BREAKDOWN OF SILOS AND BARRIERS BETWEEN MARKETS. WHAT ROLE CAN RPA PLAY IN BUILDING DIGITAL ECOSYSTEMS? AND HOW WILL IT IMPACT BUSINESS MODELS THAT ARE INCREASINGLY BASED ON DIGITALISATION?

RPA plays a central role in the new UX interfaces between users and automated systems: these true self-service systems use conversational interfaces supported by smart chatbots that interact with robots to provide users with fast and high-quality services and responses. This is an example of a digital ecosystem that combines technological capabilities with business needs.

But in the near future, advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence, combined with RPA and digital experience, will pave the way for smart automation or hyperautomation, which can run entire processes by learning from context; identify patterns in structured and predictive data; manage application exceptions based on actions/reactions, including dynamic ones; and elaborate new algorithms to create as yet unimagined relationships or obtain undiscovered results. "AI is the mind, robots are the body, and man will become the soul of smart automation" predicted Roberto Cingolani in 2017, then the director of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, now the new Minister for Ecology Transition.
