Together with the Clinical Advisory Board, Engineering has set up in 2013 a multi-disciplinary and multi-profession work group that includes health authorities and hospitals, and supported by Engineering's healthcare technological expertise. The first project being realized by the board: the evolution of the AREAS medical record for use while on the move.
In view of the recognized usefulness of computerized tools in hospital environments, the current reality shows, however, shows difficulty to the widespread diffusion of the EMR – Electronic Medical Record, in particular in the use of latest generation mobile devices. Among the motivations for these resistances, the presence of application solutions that do not adhere to real medical and nursing processes, that are lacking in efficiency from the point of view of interaction with the user interface.
On the basis of this evidence, as a first project entrusted to the Clinical Advisory Board, Engineering has identified the analysis activities and prototype development of the new AREAS medical record: EMR 2.0.
A project that sees the “Clinical User Experience Design” at the center, that can be summarized into a bottom-up approach focused on the real needs of healthcare operators and on their perceptions of aspects such as utility, simplicity of use and efficiency of the system. A different way of realizing applications, that is based on a greater, direct and continuous involvement of medical operators, during the planning, development and testing phases. Thanks to the technological, methodological and operational approach, the functions of the new application are rapidly developed and tested by the operators in the field, and subsequently are jointly analyzed during the revision and continuous improvement process, until the users are completely satisfied.
The work group includes the Fatebenefratelli hospital in Rome, the Sant'Andrea hospital in Rome, the Tor Vergata university hospital in Rome, the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute in Bagheria, and the San Luigi Gonzaga university hospital in Orbassano.
