Engineering has acquired considerable experience in the realization of Security solutions for its institutional (ministries, public and private security agencies, local bodies...) clients over several years, also being involved in the most important research and development initiatives nationally and in Europe.

Security and Research
Homeland security is one of the most interesting topics in international research, a sector in which Engineering is creating systems and services that can analyze, forecast and investigate sources of "open" (OSINT – Open Source INTelligence) and multi-modal (text, images, videos, audio recordings) data in an integrated, consistent and coherent way in order to prevent and combat the crimes of terrorism and cyber bullying, both widely trackable on the web and social media (as current cases have proven: the massacre in Norway, crimes connected with North American schools; all "announced" beforehand on the web by respective culprits).
These systems use and integrate innovative techniques, technologies and models of audio analysis, image recognition, movie recognition, social network analysis, text mining, human computer interaction, cognitive psychology, together with information fusion and artificial intelligence models and techniques.
On the same technological path, there are solutions that support the police forces in preventing, or when prevention is impossible, anticipating crimes against cultural heritage and against critical infrastructures, integrating information on the web, information provided voluntarily by people (crowd-sensing) and sensor networks. The system uses the principles of crowdsourcing to allow people to take part and contribute during management of a crime-linked emergency.
Other solutions provide for the automatic extraction of relevant information and facts from video surveillance files, without neglecting the inevitable aspects of privacy, thus supporting the analysis of large amounts of videos.
Engineering has realized a multi-biometric (face, voice, signature dynamics) authentication service and system on personal mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) for the field of biometric authentication for access to information, critical information and confidential information systems.
In the area of border security and protection, Engineering is taking part in the construction of the system of systems (national) of maritime surveillance in various countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece) in collaboration with the European agencies Frontex and EMSA. Likewise, Engineering realizes critical services in the border surveillance sector, the so-called CONOPS (Concept of Operations), defined by FRONTEX, EMSA, EUSC, JRC, ESA and the European Commission.
The research initiatives also cover the most emerging area of cyber security, a sector in which Engineering takes part in the main European initiatives, above all that of EOS (European Organization for Security) for the definition of a European strategy for the protection of cyberspace and for the realization of solutions to combat botnets (networks formed by devices connected to the internet and infected by malware, controlled by a single entity, the botmaster).
All these initiatives are proof of the spectrum of solutions currently being realized or already realized in a context like that of security (public, infrastructural, border) that has become extremely complex in recent years; initiatives that confirm the need to go beyond conventional solutions that are already used and based on state-of-the-art models and technologies.
It is necessary to realize intelligent systems that support (and in some cases substitute) humans in the analysis process (especially analysis of enormous amounts of information, both in real time and deferred), but also in decision-making processes. In this sense, Engineering is busy in the construction of cutting-edge solutions in the above-stated sectors and in the exploration of new sectors and innovative solutions.
