Air-Gap backup solutions for securing Airport Systems

Challenge
As part of a proactive protection strategy and a broader Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) plan, the challenge was to reinforce the backup infrastructure, not just to ensure data recovery, but to elevate the overall Cyber Resilience posture in an increasingly complex threat landscape.
Approach
Building on our ongoing collaboration in managing the IT infrastructure of a leading Italian airport operator and our support in defining their Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery strategy, we proposed an evolution of the backup infrastructure focused on Cyber Resilience, with the goal of strengthening data security through isolation solutions and protection against cyberattacks.
We implemented an air-gapped backup solution based on Commvault Network Gateway, with the goal of isolating production services (clients) from the backup infrastructure (servers) at each site and minimizing the risk of data corruption.
The Network Gateways manage the inbound traffic to the Backup Servers through an isolated subnet, which is only accessible by the Gateways themselves.
Additionally, firewalls were installed with outbound-only connections to the gateways, ensuring complete isolation from the client environment.

Completion of the Business Continuity Management strategy (BCDR plans) with a Cyber Resilience approach
