Research Project

SUN project: where the physical and virtual worlds meet

Extended reality (XR) solutions that integrate the physical and the virtual world, towards the concept of Web3.0 and Metaverse.

Where: international
Challenge
The XR technologies are increasingly used in many application areas having several issues to face: lack of solutions to develop scalable and cost-effective new XR applications; lack of convincing solutions for mixing the virtual and physical environment; lack of plausible and convincing human interaction interfaces in XR; lack of interoperability among the different environments.
Approach

All the solutions devloped in SUN (Social and hUman ceNtered XR) will be demonstrated in three real-life scenarios:

  • XR for rehabilitation after accidents or diseases
  • XR in the industry sector to increase safety and improve social interaction among workers
  • XR to remove interaction barriers for persons with disabilities.
Digital Ecosystem
Solution
Digital Ecosystem

SUN will develop the SUN XR Platfrom including scalable solutions for representing digital twins, wearable sensors and haptic interfaces, artificial intelligence-based solutions to address limitations of wearable devices, Hyper-realistic avatars - physically convincing - digital 3D twins of real people, blockchain-based solutions for the digital assement management. Engineering leads the design of the SUN XR Platform as well as the implementation of the Tokenized Platform, based on blockchain technology and NFTs, for the fair, trasparent and secure management of the XR digital assets. Engineering also provides its deep expertise and knowledge in the context of the Data Space for the definition of the first European Media Data Space.

The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101092612.
