Market Interface Platform:
a digital platform for the local Energy Flexibility Market

A digital marketplace that connects grid operators, aggregators, and customers, enabling a structured, secure, and transparent exchange of energy flexibility at a local level.

What is the Market Interface Platform (MIP)?

The Market Interface Platform (MIP) is Engineering’s digital platform that enables the Local Energy Flexibility Market, allowing intelligent management of consumption and production within local electricity grids.

Developed within the European PLATONE project and tested in the RomeFlex framework, MIP connects all the stakeholders involved in managing ancillary electricity flexibility services: energy distribution companies, operators aggregating customer and business resources, the Market Operator (GME), and the registry that collects consumption and production data.

MIP represents the enabling infrastructure of an Energy Flexibility Marketplace, where the ability to modulate consumption and production can be enhanced and traded in a structured, transparent, and local manner, in line with a specifically defined market scheme.

What does Engineering’s Market Interface Platform do?

Engineering’s Market Interface Platform (MIP) acts as a true orchestrator, coordinating all activities and enabling communication among the different system actors, transforming data and requests into concrete actions on the network.

How does it work?

MIP operates through a structured process covering the entire Local Flexibility Market cycle, from flexibility requests to financial settlement:

The process begins with the submission of a flexibility request by grid operators, for example to relieve network congestion or manage a consumption peak. At the same time, the amount of flexibility that operators representing customers and businesses can offer - by modulating their consumption or production - is estimated.

Once all information is collected, MIP structures it and sends it to the Energy Markets Operator (GME) platform, enabling the identification of the offers that best meet network needs.

Once the selection process is completed, MIP receives the outcomes: which resources have been selected, how much flexibility will be activated, and at what times of the day.

The platform distributes results to all relevant parties: grid operators who must activate flexibility, operators managing customer resources, and systems collecting metering, consumption, and production data. This enables the definition of setpoints, for example the amount of energy to be increased or reduced.

After flexibility activation, MIP verifies that the requested service has been delivered by comparing data, measurements, and baselines. This step ensures market correctness, transparency, and reliability.

FAQ

It is a system that allows energy consumers and producers to modulate their consumption or production and offer this modulation to grid operators when needed. It helps manage peaks, congestion, and renewable variability, making the power system more stable and efficient.

Because it reduces overloads and ensures service continuity without expensive infrastructure interventions, lowering CAPEX investments. Flexibility supports a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable grid.

Customers can make their flexibility available and receive financial compensation in return. Participation allows them to contribute to the energy transition and play an active role in the new energy model.

MIP is the platform that coordinates all market activities: it collects energy requests and offers, organizes them, and translates them into concrete network actions, ensuring a clear and efficient process.

The platform validates and controls all information, from consumption and production data to activation setpoints. Every operation is tracked, and only verified data are shared with market stakeholders, ensuring accuracy and transparency.

Yes. Thanks to its open and modular architecture, MIP can be replicated across networks managed by different operators. This means the benefits of the flexibility market are not limited to a single city but can be easily extended to other territories.
