Strategic asset management to enhance power grid resilience
We support electricity operators in achieving energy transition goals.
Electric service: the impact of climate change on grid infrastructure
Electricity operators are facing a challenging and complex scenario where they must ensure, on one hand, energy security - made increasingly difficult by sudden climate shifts - and, on the other hand, the achievement of Energy Transition goals. This creates an urgent need to strengthen the resilience of the electrical grid.
In recent months, events causing major service interruptions - such as those in Chile, the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), and Italian cities like Turin and Florence - have led to severe disruptions with significant social and economic consequences.
What needs to be done? First and foremost, it is essential to define and implement concrete plans to enhance the resilience of transmission and distribution networks. This requires targeted modernization efforts and the adoption of innovative technologies that can improve the strategic asset lifecycle management capabilities of energy companies.
A critical infrastructure for national development: planned investments by TSOs and DSOs in Europe and Italy
Recent international studies and reports estimate that the investment volume needed by transmission and distribution operators to modernize electricity grids in Europe approaches €900 billion. TSOs are planning to invest nearly €834 billion in their grids by 2050, while DSOs are expected to spend about €37 billion annually through 2050—of which 49% will go toward grid renewal and maintenance, and 14% toward resilience improvements. *
Focusing on the Italian context, around €6 billion per year in investments are projected for the distribution grid between 2025 and 2034. **
Equipping (or strengthening) processes, models, competencies, and digital systems that enable efficient and effective investment management becomes a critical success factor—especially considering a constantly evolving regulatory landscape.
