Strategic asset management to enhance power grid resilience

We support electricity operators in achieving energy transition goals.

Electric service: the impact of climate change on grid infrastructure

Electricity operators are facing a challenging and complex scenario where they must ensure, on one hand, energy security - made increasingly difficult by sudden climate shifts - and, on the other hand, the achievement of Energy Transition goals. This creates an urgent need to strengthen the resilience of the electrical grid.

In recent months, events causing major service interruptions - such as those in Chile, the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), and Italian cities like Turin and Florence - have led to severe disruptions with significant social and economic consequences.

What needs to be done? First and foremost, it is essential to define and implement concrete plans to enhance the resilience of transmission and distribution networks. This requires targeted modernization efforts and the adoption of innovative technologies that can improve the strategic asset lifecycle management capabilities of energy companies.

A critical infrastructure for national development: planned investments by TSOs and DSOs in Europe and Italy

Recent international studies and reports estimate that the investment volume needed by transmission and distribution operators to modernize electricity grids in Europe approaches €900 billion. TSOs are planning to invest nearly €834 billion in their grids by 2050, while DSOs are expected to spend about €37 billion annually through 2050—of which 49% will go toward grid renewal and maintenance, and 14% toward resilience improvements. *

Focusing on the Italian context, around €6 billion per year in investments are projected for the distribution grid between 2025 and 2034. **

Equipping (or strengthening) processes, models, competencies, and digital systems that enable efficient and effective investment management becomes a critical success factor—especially considering a constantly evolving regulatory landscape.

Our value-oriented bimodal approach focuses on specialized services for the strategic management of asset-related investments from both a business and technological perspective.

ASSET MANAGEMENT

  • Asset Lifecycle Management (ALM): maximizing asset value throughout their lifecycle
  • Investment Prioritization & Optimization: identifying the optimal investment portfolio based on Asset Management goals aligned with Business Value
  • Risk-Based Asset Management: managing both exogenous and endogenous risks related to assets, integrated with enterprise-level risk scenarios
  • Alignment of asset management processes and domain-specific models with regulatory standards and frameworks (e.g., ISO55000, ROSS).

TECHNOLOGY STRATEGY

  • AI & DATA
    • for rapid simulation of investment scenarios using large datasets (Asset Investment Planning)
    • to optimize permit, design, and infrastructure planning processes
    • to make the grid smarter and more flexible, managing bidirectional energy flows and integrating FRNP within a Smart Grid framework
  • Proprietary platforms and best-in-class solutions to enhance safety on worksites—identifying potentially dangerous situations or non-compliance with regulations and policies, in full compliance with privacy laws and current legislation
  • Phygital Control Center for remote monitoring of assets and predictive fault detection.
