LINGUARISE-DC: Advanced Language Technologies for European Defense

ABSTRACT
Development of advanced language technologies (HLT) to enhance communicative competence, interoperability, and decision-making support in European defense operations.

Where: International
Challenge
The European defense sector requires advanced language processing solutions to ensure the success of EU-led international missions, which are often affected by language barriers, reliance on interpreters, and security risks. It is therefore becoming urgent to adopt advanced language technologies to improve communication, analysis, and operational support within EU coalitions.
Approach
LINGUARISE-DC aims to develop on-demand language processing solutions using modern HLT for defense applications. It integrates existing components from partner projects into a comprehensive platform, assessing the impact of HLT on decision-making processes and collaboration within military command chains, with the goal of improving communication efficiency. The project also focuses on language data processing and the adaptation of interoperability to optimize Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems.
Digital Ecosystem
Solution
Digital Ecosystem

The project enhances the suitability of HLT for a wide range of military applications and missions, offering a platform tailored to operational contexts that require advanced linguistic capabilities. The approach is based on a modular solution with software middleware, aligning technological development with operational needs. LINGUARISE-DC focuses on two main application areas: support for ad hoc coalitions and the enhancement of C4ISR capabilities (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance). Engineering is involved in the development of the Assisted Annotation Service and Explainable AI components.

The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe - Contract No. 101168201.
