B-WaterSmart - A smarter water management in coastal areas

With our research project we support the development of "water-smart" societies, between new technologies and business models based on circular economy.

Challenge
The water sector in coastal areas is facing a couple of challenges such as water scarcity and increasing water demands due to economic and population growth. This can lead to overexploitation of resources, quality deterioration and regional imbalances in the availability of water resources.
Approach
The goal of B-WaterSmart is to accelerate the shift to a water-smart economy and society in coastal regions of Europe and beyond by reducing the consumption of freshwater resources, improving resource recovery and reuse, and increasing water use efficiency.
Solution
To address these challenges, B-WaterSmart applies a large-scale systemic innovation approach to select, connect and demonstrate a tailored suite of technology, management and smart data solutions for multiple water users and sectors, and create new business models based on circular economy and water-smartness. Engineering is leading the definition of a conceptual integration of the ICT solution toolkits and is the main ICT partner supporting the Venice case study. Engineering is also providing its expertise for the definition of a FIWARE-based interoperability approach and for the definition of business models. B-WaterSmart is funded within the framework of the EU programme "Horizon 2020". Grant agreement ID: 869171
