PLATOON: digitalising the energy sector by adopting disruptive technologies

Our research project to modernise of the European electricity grid, increasing energy efficiency and optimising energy asset management throught the exploitation of data.

Where: international
Challenge
The digitalization of the energy sector enables higher levels of operational excellence with the adoption of disrupting technologies. The Energy Big Data framework of the modern smart energy networks provides an ideal ecosystem for the exploitation of knowledge coming from data.
Approach
Our research project PLATOON deploys distributed/edge processing and data analytics technologies for optimized real-time energy system management in a simple way for the energy domain expert. The project develops and uses the PLATOON reference architecture, COSMAG-compliant, for building and deploying scalable and replicable energy management solutions that contribute to increased renewable energy consumption, smart grids management, increased energy efficiency and optimised energy asset management.
Solution
The solutions were validated in 7 pilot applications based on real cases of Big Data in the energy sector. PLATOON proposes to build the solution based on existing European standards and initiatives for managing the pilots’ data, for the access, models, interfaces, governance and sovereignty. In conjunction with the definition of the reference architecture, Engineering leads the design and implementation of a data security model and framework to support the different project requirements in terms of security, data access control and data usage. Engineering coordinates and executes, together with the specific local partners (Roma Capitale and Poste Italiane), the pilot on “Advanced Energy Management System and Spatial (multi-scale) Predictive Models in the Smart City”. The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme - Contract No. 872592
