Research Project

RETURN: Multi-risk science for resilient communities under a changing climate

ABSTRACT
ICT solutions for critical infrastructure monitoring using AI and IoT, enhancing risk management and stakeholder engagement.

Where: Italy
Challenge
The project aims to enhance protection and response capabilities against multi-hazard risks on critical infrastructure, while creating a collaborative model to transfer innovative solutions from research to market.
Approach
RETURN examins security at different levels, from single asset to global chains of Critical Infrastructures, with focus on interdependencies and cascading effects. The platform supports the evaluation of emerging risks, physical, natural and technological accidents triggered by natural events, through development of IT tools and open knowledge-sharing methodology.
Solution

RETURN develops science-based risk mitigation/adaptation strategies to climate and environmental changes starting from revised natural and anthropogenic hazard assessments, passing through the development of advanced methodologies to reconstruct of quantitative scenarios of the effects and ending to fine-tuning of model-guided assessment of social and economical impacts. Engineering is the coordinator of the group for holistic risk reduction activities, leader in the integration and design of the open-source Reference Architecture, and supports the design, development, and validation of the situational awareness platform.

The project is funded by PNRR, Mission 4, Component 2, Investment 1.3, funded by European Union - Next Generation EU.
