A BMS for Bridges, Viaducts and Overpasses Health Monitoring

Development and maintenance of a platform that supports the inspection management process of bridges, viaducts, and overpasses.

Approach & Solution

Approach

Our client guarantees - through the management of the road and motorway network - the territorial continuity of the country. It is implementing an ambitious programme of predictive maintenance of bridges and viaducts, starting with the evolution towards a BMS 2.0.

The main objective of a Bridge Management System (BMS) is to guarantee a functionally safe and efficient infrastructure.

A state-of-the-art BMS integrates the infrastructure's catalogue of information and documents with advanced tools and algorithms to support infrastructure managers in their decision-making processes related to infrastructure inspection, maintenance and prioritisation of operations.

Solution

In the project we provide the platform to support inspections. It is a Workforce Management System (WFM) for monitoring the health status of bridges through inspection management.

The system makes it possible to check and track the status of a possible defect in the artwork, how it evolves, and if it exceeds the attention limit. Defects are identified and tracked, according to the type and number of structural elements.

Each defect is associated with a weight. This information, suitably combined with other elements (structural vulnerability or environmental interference), makes it possible to define an index of future degradation on which to base priorities and planning of interventions.
