CompSTLar: Boosting the digital transformation of aviation supply chains

ABSTRACT
A new integrated and interoperable search ecosystem enabling faster and more informed decisions along the aircraft supply chain.

Where: International
Challenge
The path towards climate neutrality requires the aviation industry to develop more efficient, low-emission aircraft. In this context, designing lighter and more sustainable composite aerostructures is essential, while also improving their manufacturing, maintenance, repair and recycling throughout the entire lifecycle.
Approach
CompSTLar is built around the implementation of a modular digital pipeline that enables a reliable, seamless flow of data across the entire aircraft supply chain. It connects product design, modelling, quality control and Automated Tape Laying (ATL) processes with operational data from weld repairs and material recovery. This enables a reliable multidisciplinary design optimisation framework, optimised manufacturing strategies, new condition-based maintenance protocols tailored to the actual condition of aircraft structural components, and the recycling and reuse of materials.

Solution
Digital Ecosystem

CompSTLar proposes a new physical and digital research ecosystem combining scalable, automated manufacturing technologies with integrated inspection tools, AI-based solutions, advanced sensing, in-line controlled repair technologies, and automated recycling for advanced design. It enables the cost-competitive manufacturing, maintenance, repair and recycling of innovative multifunctional, multi-material thermoplastic composite aerostructures.

Engineering leads the definition of the architecture and the implementation of the interoperable Digital Platform, which will be made available through the SLICES Digital Infrastructure.

The project received funding from the Horizon Europe programme with Grant agreement 101192936.
