New personalized AI-driven cancer treatments

Challenge
Medical research makes use of supercomputing for In Silico medicine (an approach that uses computational tools to study biological systems) for processing data from omics experiments. The development of technology platforms for analysing big data with AI algorithms enables the understanding of disease progression and the development of new personalised treatments.
Approach
ERADICATE is a holistic healthcare management platform integrating a new digital pathology tool that applies AI to objectively quantify the characteristics of cancer tissue. It enables the integrated visualisation of high-resolution molecular information and histopathological data, supporting treatment decisions for patients with pancreatic and colorectal cancer. The system is implemented as a prototype and validated in an operational environment by healthcare professionals such as pathologists, oncologists and bioinformaticians, involved in the annotation of multi-omics data and histopathological images, in order to develop reliable and high-quality AI algorithms.

ENGINEERING develops the overall system.​ AI models are used to analyse histopathological images to identify morphological features of cell nuclei, assess abnormalities and highlight suspicious areas. This supports histological classification and differentiation of colorectal and pancreatic cancer subtypes, as well as serving as a prognostic indicator or index of tumour behaviour. The system provides tools for tele-consultation, facilitating the exchange of views on clinical cases between specialists in different locations, and integrates functionality for the visualisation of genomic and clinical data.
