PLEDGER: paving the way for next generation edge computing

ABSTRACT
An innovative project that combines the benefits of edge and cloud computing paradigms.

Where: international
Challenge
Edge computing allows data produced by IoT devices to be processed closer to where they are created instead of sending them across long routes to data centres or cloud. Its disruptive potential is fuelled by the unprecedented growth of data, the imminent impact of 5G networks and the growing importance of latency in modern applications.
Approach
It becomes clear that current approaches on edge computing are not sufficient to address its forthcoming massive usage, especially in the frame of large IoT deployments in smart cities and industrial applications. The PLEDGER project aims at delivering a new architectural paradigm and a toolset that will pave the way for next generation edge computing infrastructures.
Digital Ecosystem
Solution
Digital Ecosystem

PLEDGER delivers a set of tools and processes that enable:

  • edge computing providers to enhance the stability and performance effectiveness of their edge infrastructures, through runtime analysis and adaptation, the modelling of overheads and the optimal grouping of concurrently running services
  • edge computing adopters to understand the computational nature of their applications, identify how they can balance their cost and performance to optimise their competitiveness and monitor their SLAs

In the project, Engineering is mainly involved in the development of mechanisms for assessing performance of resources in the infrastructure (both Cloud and Edge nodes). The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme - Contract No. 871536
