A dynamic data ecosystem for the Municipality of Milan

ABSTRACT
We have developed a platform for smart cities that integrates over 10 IoT systems to support a range of urban services: lighting, connectivity, mobility and environmental monitoring.

Where: Italy
Challenge
The Municipality of Milan had been using various IoT solutions for waste management, parking and traffic, creating separate data silos. To overcome this fragmentation, we developed a single platform that integrates around ten applications using a modular architecture, separating data collection and visualisation for the various services, and granting specialised suppliers access to different operational levels.
Approach
The Digital Enabler manages the processing and visualisation of data from the implemented solution, integrating with existing systems (municipal software, data storage systems and sensor data collection). Thanks to an event-driven architecture, it monitors data in real time across secure test and production environments and triggers the necessary actions in response to specific conditions or parameters.
Solution
The platform, through intuitive interfaces, enables the monitoring of devices, provides tools for combining data from different sources and connecting to external services (e.g. alerts from the Regional Civil Protection Agency), and facilitates centralised management of access and automatic notifications. Thanks to these features, the solution enables staff to efficiently coordinate urban services such as smart lighting, public Wi-Fi, car parks, traffic, and the monitoring of underpasses and litter bins. Eng oversaw the installation on the municipal infrastructure, integration with existing systems, and the creation of customised dashboards for the various urban services. Furthermore, it configured the automatic deployment system, providing ongoing technical support and training for staff.
