BRIGHT: boosting Demand Response through increased consumer engagement

Bringing individual consumers center stage to deliver a community-centred adaptable Demand Response (DR) framework.

Where: international
Challenge
The increasing electrification of heat and transport and larger decentralized RESs deployment discloses new opportunities for DR. DR potential has been exploited to a limited extent, that is at the residential level of end consumers. This is due to tech immaturity, regulatory fuzziness, distorted business frameworks which are preventing end consumers in capturing an appropriate value from DR.
Approach
The research project BRIGHT realizes a multi-timescale DR strategy that works from a day-ahead scheduling up to real-time adaptive control. The proposed solution allows individual assets to simultaneously provide power balancing services, grid congestion management, and economic benefits to participating stakeholders.
Solution
The solution uses Digital Twins for consumers predictability, multi-layered P2P, DLT/blockchain/smart contracts based on semi-decentralized Vitural Power Plants (VPP), value stacking flexibility management algorithms and other AI data-driven energy and non energy services. This approach is validated in 4 demo-sites across 4 EU countries where 1000 residential consumers will be engaged. Engineering is the Project Coordinator and the Technology provider, in particular blockchain enablers for decentralised VPP. The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme - Contract No. 957816
