HEAL ITALIA: Italian Innovation Hub for Precision Medicine

ABSTRACT
Improving diagnosis, monitoring, therapies and prevention for major high impact diseases affecting people’s health and the sustainability of the healthcare system, through the application of Big Data and AI.

Where: Italy
Challenge
Cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders and rare diseases require faster diagnoses, personalized care pathways and continuous monitoring, which are still often constrained by fragmented data and clinical processes. The Heal Italia Foundation coordinates the first Italian public–private ecosystem for research, innovation and industrial development in precision medicine, with a person centred approach.
Approach
To enable diagnostic pathways capable of anticipating the onset or progression of diseases, HEAL Italia adopts an approach based on the integrated analysis of clinical health data. The initiative is structured into eight Spokes, each focused on specific areas of biomedical research. The integration of data, analytical models, precision diagnostics, innovative therapies and prevention strategies transforms research into concrete clinical tools, based on digital technologies and devices, ensuring effective, personalized and sustainable healthcare services while fully respecting data protection requirements.

Digital Ecosystem

HEAL Italia develops a collaborative platform for the management and analysis of health data in support of precision medicine, designed to integrate and enhance large volumes of data from heterogeneous sources. The platform processes data securely and in compliance with European data protection regulations, enabling predictive models that can be applied in clinical settings to support diagnosis, patient monitoring and therapy personalization. Within Spoke 2 – Intelligent Health, dedicated to the application of advanced AI and machine learning to healthcare Big Data, Engineering is responsible for the development of the large scale health data management platform.

The project is funded by the PNRR – Mission 4, Component 2, Investment 1.3.
