No more unplanned machine stoppages thanks to SERENA

Challenge
The aim of the SERENA project was to create a cloud platform which, by giving information about equipment degradation, tries to anticipate failures allowing to reduce time and costs related to maintenance activities.
Approach
Whirlpool is a multinational company that has been engaged for more than 100 years in the production of household appliances of high quality standards. The platform allows the plant operators to exploit advanced data analytics services in a simple way, being supported by a dashboard while monitoring machineries status and by AR-based tools during the maintenance activity at the shop-floor. The challenge was to create such a platform in a secure and highly modular way so that it could be easily tailored to the needs of different industrial sectors.

Thanks to the plug-and-play and micro-services based architecture of SERENA, we built and hosted on our infrastructure a testbed - securely connected to the Biandronno Whirlpool plant - to monitor foaming machines during injection cycles. Includes: collect and normalize the foaming machines low-level data with the SERENA gateway and dispatch them toward the SERENA broker, store the normalized output with the SERENA storage service and continuously analyse them with the SERENA predictor service, finally show to the plant operators the predictions related to the Remaining Useful Life of foaming machine components via the SERENA Dashboard. By adopting this solution as part of SERENA pilot case, Whirpool has been able to anticipate and schedule a foaming injector maintenance avoiding long machinery downtimes.
