SOFIE Secure Open Federation for the Internet Everywhere

Research project aimed at developing an open, secure and decentralised federation of blockchain-based IoT platforms, enabling data and information to be utilised in new ways.

Where: Italy
Challenge
IoT technology generates vast volumes of data, but the true revolution lies in the ability to seamlessly converge data from diverse devices, sensors, and platforms. This convergence enriches the generated information and enhances decision-making support.
Approach
SOFIE is specifically designed with this objective in mind: to create an open, decentralized, and scalable IoT architecture that enables access to numerous IoT platforms within a single federation. This is achieved through the development of an "adapter" and the utilization of blockchain-enabled interconnections. Three pilot projects are testing the solution in the sectors of agri-food supply chain traceability, gaming, and energy district management. We at Engineering are working on the latter, enabling optimal network control through blockchain.

Solution
Digital Ecosystem

Engineering develops an administratively decentralised federation of IoT platforms for business use in which data is not merely integrated; instead, it will remain inside the corresponding IoT platforms, but will be usable by different applications while maintaining high standards of security and privacy: SOFIE will ensure end-to-end security as well as key management, authorisation, accountability and inspection functionality by leveraging blockchain technology. We are also participating in standardisation activities and adopting open standards, existing interfaces and components such as FIWARE, W3C Web of Things (WoT) and oneM2M.
