Research Project

VR to support people with an autism spectrum condition

ABSTRACT
An innovative and integrated solution to support young patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Where: italy
Challenge
Recent research has investigated the effectiveness of Virtual Reality (VR) techniques for the treatment of ASD, focusing on the possibility to implement them on clinical relapses for ASC individuals.
Approach
Compared to classic interventions, the ones based on Brain-Computer Interaction (BCI) and VR respond to a series of characteristics found in ASD patients, indeed, they react better to a visual learning method and are very quick in learning to use a computer. The structure of these treatments is perfectly linear and well organized, with repetitions which allow to reinforce and consolidate learning, with immediate feedback. Furthermore, these types of interventions focus on specific skills and training, and the therapist can adjust and modify the scenarios according to the patient's individual needs.

Solution
Digital Ecosystem
The project implements a scenario-based learning platform for the creation, release, use and monitoring of therapeutic or training sessions. The execution of each session is tracked directly by the software, which monitors the results and a series of parameters (such as level of attention and of stress) collected via webcam and processed using AI algorithms. In addition, the implementation of a Decision Support System is envisaged that integrates the data collected during the sessions with data managed by Public Administrations and the national and local health system. Engineering integrates the overall system and develops the Decision Support System. The project responds to the PCP originally issued by the collaboration of MUR and AgID in the context of Programma Operativo Complementare (POC) RIcerca e Innovazione 2014-2020, now merging in Smarter Italy.
