Interview with the Group Public Affairs Director of Engineering Group.
Marco Valentini is the Group Public Affairs Director of the Engineering Group.
He's graduated in Law from Luiss University in Rome, where he currently teaches "The Audiovisual Market".
He has gained over 20 years of experience across various sectors (legal, audiovisual, cinema, telecommunications, AI) both in Italy and abroad, achieving significant results and contributing to leadership transformation in the different companies he has worked for, including SKY Italia and Tele5 Spain.
ENG has always recognized the key role of its relationship with institutions. Public Affairs plays an increasingly relevant function today, especially in a Group like Eng, where activities of public interest require a well-structured, agile, and effective function. Our relationships with institutions are based on topics that we discuss in all relevant venues, presenting the company's position after an in-depth study and research process.
My idea of the Public Affairs function is metaphorically represented as a "bridge" between institutions (Parliament, Government, Ministries, etc.) and the company's business.
On the one hand, we must explain the company’s position in key institutional settings, focusing on high-quality content and representing the needs of the market.
On the other hand, it is essential to consider the needs of institutions to find the right balance between the interests of the community and all relevant stakeholders.
All of this is possible only through a thorough back-up research process, allowing us to bring high-level content to all institutional venues.
For our Group, creating consensus among stakeholders is crucial. Given Eng’s role of public interest, it is necessary to find the right balance between our position and the interests expressed by the community and various institutional entities, reaching a synthesis at the most appropriate moment.
Occupying a clear position in the minds of our political and institutional interlocutors - where the company is well recognized and considered credible for the quality of its contributions - is an essential value for Eng and my Public Affairs team.
In this regard, it is important to explain Eng's diverse activities, sometimes with a high degree of technical complexity, to all institutional stakeholders. This requires constant updates on the company’s activities to decision-makers through high-quality, content-based work.
The Public Affairs team covers a broad range of activities, working on multiple fronts and with key institutions, including Parliament, Government, and Ministries, at both the national and European levels.
My team consists of highly skilled professionals, each with their own expertise but always able to interchange roles when needed. These professionals play a vital role in helping me extend the department’s scope, covering all the different dossiers on the table.
Before defining a corporate position on a given topic, two key steps are necessary: thoroughly studying the context surrounding the issue; interviewing our most experienced colleagues on the technical matter, identifying key aspects, opportunities, and potential risks.
To achieve concrete results, our work must be strongly integrated with that of the Business Lines. Maintaining constant alignment and synergy is essential, allowing us to achieve important results - such as Eng’s recent participation in the G7 "Innovation and Technology Industry" as the only Italian company invited to represent our country’s AI industry.
Public Affairs is a key function for the company. In recent years, as Eng’s activities - of significant public interest - have expanded, it became necessary to establish a more structured function, capable of engaging with institutions in a more organized, systematic, and effective manner. The priority has been to focus on content quality and the ability to align corporate interests with those of the community.
Eng has had a Public Affairs policy in place for years to take the company to the next level, equipping it with clear and transparent rules on how to engage with institutions - helping to prevent and avoid any potential issues.
When I joined in May 2024, the Public Affairs department needed recalibration - placing the business at the center and fostering a more proactive, structured, and bold culture. These are the key principles of my approach.
For a Group like Eng, it is crucial to conduct Public Affairs activities with the utmost attention, both nationally and at the European level. In Brussels, the "highways" of future legislation are built, which later translate into the "narrower roads" navigable in Italy.
Some of the key topics currently of interest to the Group include:
Artificial Intelligence: We are closely monitoring the government’s draft bill on AI, contributing to shaping an ethical, human-centered, and industrially effective use of AI. We are also active at the EU level, where we were among the first signatories of the AI PACT, an agreement promoted by the European Commission to prepare companies for the implementation of the AI Act.
Data Centers: A highly relevant parliamentary dossier, aiming to regulate a sector crucial for Italy’s digital development. Data centers form the infrastructure backbone of all digital technologies. Engineering has been actively involved in the debate, participating in a parliamentary hearing at the Chamber of Deputies and hosting a delegation from the Transport Commission at our Val D’Aosta data center to showcase Italy’s existing expertise in this field.
ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance): Sustainability is a priority for the Group, both in terms of the Corporate compliance with EU regulations and the role of digital technologies in achieving environmental, social, and governance goals.
We are closely following the EU’s "Omnibus Package" debate, which could lead to substantial changes to the current regulatory framework.
In my opinion, an effective Public Affairs strategy is essential to ensure constructive dialogue between the company and institutions - contributing to a balanced and sustainable regulatory framework that fosters innovation, competitiveness, and responsible development.onsabile.
