Keep consumption under control with the Utilities Digital Platform

With the Metering component of our Utilities Digital Platform, we optimise management of consumption calculations for billing of an important energy player.

Where: Italy
Challenge
To create a "billing-orientated" system to align the calculation and validation of consumption, reducing the gap between their measurement and the billing process.
Approach
A leading company in the Power & Gas sector requested Engineering's support to create a solution that could combat waste during checks, thereby avoiding a high number of corrections and complaints regarding readings and unused consumption amounts at the billing stage. Our solution needed optimise the response times of the system, both in terms of the acquisition and validation of mass flows (at least 200,000 readings her hour) and in terms of the services dedicated to users for communicating self-readings (maximum 2.6 seconds for receipt and validation).
Solution
To implement the service, we used the Metering component of our Utilities Digital Platform (Net@SIU module), integrating it with the other support systems of the company's business. Our intervention involved our Technology Services team, IT consulting team, and our UX & Service design team to provide training and change management. In this way, the solution objectives of usability (GUI dedicated to Customer Care operators), performance (greater speed in validating readings) and centrality (single Front End for consulting data and readings) were achieved, identifying both technical and business-related specific KPIs. Now, the service manages the readings of more than 8 million clients and every month the system acquires and processes approximately 10 million readings and 600,000 automated readings with response times of less than 1 second.
