GS1 Italia Servizi & AWS: a single, integrated data model

ABSTRACT

Eng and GS1 Italy Servizi collaborate to advance a new era of retail with a revolutionary platform on AWS Cloud.

Where: Italy

Challenge
The non-profit organization GS1 develops the world's most widely used standards for business-to-business communication. In Italy, GS1 Italy brings together 40.000 companies. For over 45 years, collaboration and dialogue have been the methods through which GS1 Italy enhances relations among companies, associations, institutions, and consumers, innovating data exchange processes throughout the supply chain. GS1 serves as a historical reference point for sectors including FMCG, healthcare, banking, logistics, foodservice, and construction. GS1 Italy Servizi is the entity established to provide user companies with tangible support in adopting GS1 Italy's innovations and solutions for enhancing business efficiency.

To address the challenge of improving the efficiency and accessibility of product data, GS1 Italy Servizi launches ONE, a platform that centralizes product information currently dispersed across multiple vertical services, offering novel ways to access and utilize the data.
Approach
Thus, ONE aims to serve as the single point of access for managing product data in an automatic, real-time, and integrated manner, benefiting GS1, its stakeholders, and the entire value chain. The platform was developed leveraging our expertise in the Mass Market Retail & GDO sector, while adhering to GS1 standards.

GS1's operational strategy focuses on Data Management to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. The GS1 barcode, utilized by over one million companies in Italy and over 150 countries, serves as the cornerstone for facilitating the exchange of information between industry and distribution channels in a clear and error-free manner.

Solution
Digital Ecosystem

The project achieved the development of a platform based on three key principles.

  • Firstly, a unified and centralized data model was established, eliminating the “silos” that previously constrained product data. This provided the flexibility to seamlessly incorporate new information sources as needed.
  • Additionally, a user-friendly web portal was created to streamline data access, complemented by the implementation of connectors (APIs) for real-time integration with users' systems.
  • Furthermore, various data slicing methods were introduced to enable modular and tailored offerings to different user profiles, ranging from retailers to research institutes to application developers.
