RomeFlex solution and Engineering's platform

We enable a comprehensive, evolved and inclusive local Flexibility Marketplace for prosumers, serving all utilities in the area.

Challenge

Increase in energy consumption is driven, on the one hand, by the electrification of mobility and, on the other, by the growing spread of distributed generation from renewable sources, often provided by small producers. These trends are leading to increasing electricity flows that must be supported by local distribution networks.

As a result, forecasting energy distribution within the grid becomes more complex, with the risk of congestion, outages, and inefficiencies.

Approach
In this context, the Local Flexibility Market plays a key role. This is a market in which consumers, producers, and prosumers (users who both consume and produce energy) can provide ancillary services by reducing or increasing their production and consumption profiles in response to the needs of Distribution System Operators (DSOs), through Aggregators.
In return, participants receive financial compensation. Therefore, the Local Flexibility Market helps DSOs maintain grid balance, ensure service quality, and reduce infrastructure investment costs.
Solution

Our multi-platform solution enables all local actors — Distribution System Operators (DSOs), Balance Service Providers (BSPs), i.e. aggregators, consumers, and prosumers — to operate in a coordinated and efficient way. They can adjust their consumption or production, regulating the amount of electricity flowing through the grid according to a market-based logic.
This ensures a balanced distribution and allows efficient management of recurring peaks in demand or renewable energy production.

At the core of the RomeFlex multi-platform is the Market Interface Platform (MIP) developed by Engineering, which connects energy distributors and BSPs with the Italian Energy Markets Operator (GME), while also enabling consumers and prosumers to actively participate in the local flexibility market.
