Brescia: Sustainable Mobility Becomes a Game

ABSTRACT

BrESCI is an experimental project that promotes sustainable mobility through an app featuring gamification mechanisms and rewards. By actively involving a group of citizens in an initial pilot phase, the initiative aims to encourage virtuous behaviors and collect useful data for urban planning.

Challenge
Brescia Mobilità S.p.A., a company owned by the Municipality of Brescia, manages urban mobility services and promotes sustainable solutions. In the context of ecological and urban transition, the challenge was to encourage virtuous behavior among citizens and city users by promoting the use of public transport and bicycles for commuting, while also testing new engagement methods.
Approach
We adopted an agile and experimental approach based on co-design and field testing. Municipia developed an innovative app on the MUV Cloud platform, integrated with existing mobility services, to monitor and incentivize the use of sustainable transport, actively involving citizens through a participatory testing phase.

Solution
Digital Ecosystem

The BrESCI project involved the creation of an experimental app to encourage sustainable mobility, integrated with a gamification system. The app securely and anonymously tracks users’ movements across different modes of transport—including personal bicycles—assigning points based on the sustainability of the chosen mode. Points, managed through a dedicated back office, can be converted into rewards (travel passes, discounts) via a digital catalog.

The system also allows for thematic campaigns and user experience customization. The pilot nature of the project enabled the collection of direct feedback from testers, useful for improving and adapting the app before a potential wider rollout.
