EITHOS: a European observatory on digital identity theft

A European observation system for the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes related to online identity theft.

Where: international
Challenge
With the growing spread of digital technologies, online identity theft crimes are on the rise, as is citizens’ attention to protecting their personal data. Police investigations are hampered by rapidly evolving threats and the lack of adequate technological tools; therefore, it is essential to develop advanced knowledge and tools, including AI-based ones, to keep pace with cybercrime.
Approach

EITHOS provides a single portal for information and intelligence on identity theft in Europe, built on a modern technological back-end and structured around two strategic pillars:

  • Informing and educating European citizens through the observatory itself and innovative awareness campaigns on personal data and digital identity security;
  • Supporting law enforcement authorities in addressing the challenges of identity theft crimes by developing a robust set of software tools to enhance their investigative intelligence capabilities.

Solution
Digital Ecosystem

The system supports access for European citizens, law enforcement, and policymakers to information and intelligence services for identifying trends related to identity theft. Through an intuitive user interface, the solution provides a set of cutting-edge AI-based technological tools that enable, for example, the detection of deepfakes and bots on social media. The system also analyzes the social impact of identity theft crimes and the legal framework for using cloud-based AI technologies and for exchanging digital evidence. Engineering is responsible for the development of the observatory and ensures its proper functioning.
