Case Study

A BMS for Bridges, Viaducts and Overpasses Health Monitoring

ABSTRACT
Development and maintenance of a platform that supports the inspection management process of bridges, viaducts, and overpasses.

Where: Italy
Challenge
Bridges are complex structures; their management requires expertise and special attention to all technical, social and economic aspects. Our client ensures the territorial continuity of the country by managing the road and motorway network. It is implementing an ambitious programme of predictive maintenance of bridges and viaducts, starting with the evolution towards a BMS 2.0.
Approach
The main objective is to ensure a functionally safe and efficient infrastructure. A state-of-the-art bridge management system (BMS) integrates the infrastructure information and document catalogue with advanced tools and algorithms to support key stakeholders in making decisions regarding infrastructure inspection and maintenance and prioritising actions. As part of the project, we provided the platform to support inspections: a Workforce Management System (WFM) for monitoring the health of bridges through inspection management.

Solution
Digital Ecosystem
The system makes it possible to check the status of a possible defect in the artwork and to track how it evolves, and whether it exceeds the attention threshold. Defects are identified and tracked by type and number of structural elements. Each defect is associated with a weighting. This information, suitably combined with other elements (structural vulnerability or environmental impact), makes it possible to define an index of future deterioration on which to base priorities and intervention planning.
