Research Project

CAPRI: cognitive processes at the service of productivity

ABSTRACT
Our research project to optimize production and reduce emissions in the process industry through cognitive automation.

Where: international
Challenge
Process industries are realities in which there is a significant use of energy resources for the production of goods, but with a low level of automation and IT skills.
Approach
The CAPRI project aims to create an integrated platform (called "Cognitive Automation Platform"), based on cognitive processes, which allows to optimize production, improving product quality, and reducing the amount of resources needed (including electricity) and also reducing CO2 emissions. The project will be demonstrated in three relevant sectors, such as the asphalt manufacturing industry, the pharmaceutical industry and the steel manufacturing industry.
Starting from the requirements of the three use cases, an integrated solution will be designed and implemented, consisting of four levels of sensors, control, operation and planning, based on an edge-cloud hybrid architecture, with services and solutions for cognitive computing. Engineering leads the design of the platform based on open source solutions such as FIWARE and Apache, and supports the integration of the solution in the three pilot plants, also producing guidelines and blueprints to facilitate the reuse of the solutions in new pilots and in new domains. CAPRI Project is funded by European Community, under Horizon 2020, grant n. 870062.
