Reduced water losses for Aqueducts

Challenge
According to data provided by Arera, one of our customers, which stretches for about 20 thousand kilometers, serving more than 260 municipalities, loses about half of the water it injects into its pipelines.
Approach
Given that for a good part of its route the aqueduct is flanked by a fiber optic structure, we have inserted along some sections sensors capable of dialoguing with an integrated multi-parameter monitoring platform, which collects and analyzes data from the network supporting the precise and timely identification of anomalous flows, indicative of malfunctions and critical issues. In addition, through the use of Artificial Intelligence, our platform is also able to do predictive analysis capable of pre-localizing possible failures, so as to facilitate a major abatement of water losses.
Solution
The system is divided into levels. The field level, consisting of the sensors acquire the significant parameters of the network through the use of innovative fiber-optic Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, is capable of simultaneously measuring flow rate, pressure and acoustic vibrations. The communication layer consists of the devices for data transmission from the sensors to the control center. Finally, the analysis layer (Decision Support System), located at the control center, consists of the software for advanced analysis of the acquired data, supplemented with the additional information available for locating leaks. The system thus operates through two phases: Pre-localization: localization of leaks using simulation tools based on AI, Machine Learning, and sensor data already in use by the Water Authority.
