PlatOne: Blockchain for the energy network

With Blockchain technology, we enable greater energy flexibility and trusted consumption monitoring, placing users at the center of the energy network.

Where: Italy
Challenge
The energy transition requires increasingly innovative solutions. The growing adoption of renewable energy source, characterized by variable generation, combined with increasingly unpredictable consumption patterns, calls for higher levels of grid monitoring and flexibility.
Approach
Engineering is contributing to the development of PlatOne (PLATform for Operation of Distribution NEtworks), a project that leverages Blockchain technology to increase the flexibility of the electricity grid in response to fluctuations in energy supply and demand. The solution helps create a more dynamic energy system by encouraging active user participation and supporting the evolution toward distributed energy networks that are increasingly integrated with renewable sources.
Solution

PlatOne enables the secure and transparent management of energy data and transactions, supporting local flexibility ancillary service markets. By leveraging digital technologies, it connects users, system operators, and aggregators to optimize the balance between energy supply and demand while facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources, ensuring grid stability and certified energy transactions.

Coordinated by RWTH Aachen University, the project sees Engineering leading the development of a Blockchain solution based on its proprietary ChainPro framework. The platform is designed to optimize energy network operations and support the integration of renewable energy sources and new electricity use cases. Engineering is responsible for designing and developing innovative services, including a peer-to-peer energy marketplace, fully compliant with regulatory requirements and built to support system operators, aggregators, and end users through a multi-layer architecture.

The project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No. 864300.
