Research Project

Waste4think for circular economy

ABSTRACT
New technologies and new approaches enable effective waste management.

Where: international
Challenge
The adoption of effective solutions to reduce the environmental impact of waste has become a priority for both industry and civil society. Imagine if citizens and businesses could actively participate in initiatives aimed at improving waste management services, paying only for the disposal of waste they actually generate and receiving incentives to reduce its quantity and facilitate recycling.
Approach
The Waste4think project aims to revolutionize waste management by promoting the adoption of circular economy principles. This initiative involves four European cities located in Italy, Spain, Greece, and Portugal. This vision could drive the transition from our current linear model to one based on the circular economy, where the initial problem becomes an integral part of the solution.
Solution

We participate by implementing an IoT platform that leverages the FIWARE ecosystem's core technologies. We support waste data management with a holistic approach and "eco-innovative" solutions including:

  • Apps for citizens, to promote their empowerment and engagement
  • IT tools to support day-to-day operations and long-term planning
  • Educational material based on new teaching methods and "serious games"
  • Tools for citizens, aimed at creating new solutions
  • Mechanisms to trigger behavioral changes based on economic incentives and social actions
  • Decentralized solutions to enhance and reuse of high-value resources
