Road-STEAMer: developing a STEAM roadmap for science education in Horizon Europe

ABSTRACT
A guide on how to encourage more interest in STEM through arts

Challenge
STEM education is a teaching practice that challenges the notion that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are isolated disciplines, each demanding unique and context-specific methodologies. In its latest version, STEM seeks to incorporate the arts to make its teaching more engaging and impactful. However, existing STEAM initiatives remain fragmented, leading to uneven development.
Approach
To address these challenges, Road-STEAMer presents an integrated framework for introducing STEAM into educational practices, fostering better coordination among stakeholders. To promote this approach effectively, it is essential for various initiatives to adopt an ecosystem standpoint, focusing on capturing the needs, contributions, and relationships of all education-related actors.

Digital Ecosystem

Road-STEAMer develops a STEAM roadmap to facilitate the integration of the STEAM approach into science education practices throughout Europe. By engaging in co-creation with various stakeholder communities in science education, research, innovation, and creativity, the project ensures a comprehensive and inclusive approach. The project has a bottom-up approach emphasizing educational practice rather than high-level and generic top-down plans and focuses on ways to leverage the power of STEAM approaches. Engineering designs and deploys the Road-STEAMer CoP Suite, a web-based open-source set of tools that empowers knowledge-sharing and collaboration.

The success of this project is further solidified by its co-funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe programme, under Contract No. 101058405.
