Keep Consumption Under Control with the Utilities Digital Platform

CASE STUDY

With the Metering component of our Utilities Digital Platform, we optimize consumption management and calculation for the billing processes of a major energy player.

Where: italy

Challenge
Developing a billing-oriented system to align consumption calculation and validation, reducing the gap between measurement and the billing process.
Approach
A leading Power & Gas sales company turned to Engineering for support in developing a solution to overcome fragmented control processes—significantly reducing billing corrections and customer complaints related to unbilled readings and consumption. Our intervention also focused on optimizing system response times: both for the acquisition and validation of large-scale data flows (at least 200,000 readings per hour) and for user-facing services such as self-reading submissions, ensuring a maximum of 2.6 seconds for receipt and validation.
Solution

To implement the service, we leveraged the Metering component of our Utilities Digital Platform, integrating it with other systems supporting the company’s business operations. The project involved our Technology Services, IT Consulting, and UX Service Design teams for training and change management activities.

This approach enabled us to achieve key objectives in usability (a dedicated GUI for Customer Care operators), performance (faster reading validation), and solution centralization (a single Front End for data and reading consultation), with clearly defined technical and business KPIs.

Today, the service manages meter readings for over 8 million customers. Each month, the system acquires and processes approximately 10 million readings and 600,000 self-readings, with user response times under 1 second.
