Approach

New technologies can provide great support for investigative processes against illegal trade.

The objective of the European Project ANITA, of which Engineering is the coordinator, is designing and developing automated tools to monitor drug trafficking, counterfeit medicines, new psychoactive substances (NPS) and firearms connected to terrorism.

ANITA conduces an in-depth analysis of illicit online traffic and related social, ethical, legal and privacy-related issues, as a basis on which to develop innovative tools.

Solution

The project involves the development of a platform that supports investigations into illegal traffic through the identification and analysis of heterogeneous online data sources (text, audio, video, image). In this way, it provides relevant resources for the investigations.

This will be possible through the combination of:
  • innovative technologies for the analysis of cryptocurrency networks and heterogeneous financial transactions
  • automated merging and processing of data and information
  • user friendly data intelligence software, allowing users to identify spatial, temporal and causal correlations between events, entities and illegal traffic activities.

At the end of the project, the results will be demonstrated by the police forces involved.

The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme - Contract No. 787061.
