L4MS: enhancing manufacturing SMEs

A project to unleash manufacturing SMEs' digitalization potential by powering new and more cost effective robot systems for intralogistics.

Approach & Solution

Approach

Outdated intra-factory logistics are troubling European manufacturing sector, whose logistics account for up to half of total manufacturing costs. Investments in advanced technologies would tackle the production challenge, but they require strategic thinking, simulation, planning, re-skilling and access to finance; resources that most manufacturers do not have.

L4MS has helped small and medium-sized manufacturers and automation providers to pilot advanced technologies in factories by offering an industrial IoT platform to connect factory equipment and test the desired solution virtually before final investment decision.

L4MS has offered funding, technical mentoring and business expertise to help lift manufacturing productivity in Europe.

Solution

L4MS has relied upon:
  • an open IIoT platform (OPIL) with enablers for rapid and efficient deployment of customized logistics solutions
  • a suite of smartization services including business modelling, technical support, mentoring, access to skills and to finance
  • the RAMP (Robotics Automation MarketPlace) Marketplace, a one-stop-shop, where European Manufacturing SMEs & Mid-Caps will access the L4MS services
  • a portfolio of 23 cross-border Application Experiments by 50 SMEs selected through 2 competitive Open Calls.

Engineering led the definition of the OPIL (Open Platform for Innovation in Logistcs) on top of which to build the solutions such as those developed within the application experiments.

L4MS has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 767642.
