Prysmian Group, the world’s leading manufacturer of electric power transmission and telecommunications cables, chooses Engineering Group, the leading player in digital transformation, and RealWear, Inc, the global leader of hands-free head-mounted tablets for digital transformation in industry, to transform the way the company approaches Field Service Management. By introducing a new digital platform called “PG Connect”, Prysmian Group is now able to extend its field service teams’ capabilities during remote testing, collaboration and operations activities. This platform developed by the Engineering Group combines the SPACE1 Augmented Reality product, with RealWear’s HMT-1 voice-enabled headsets.

Prysmian Group has over 29,000 employees across 50 countries and 106 production plants. As the current state of emergency prevents its customers from attending test activities and trials in person, the innovative multinational company needed an effective tool to remotely engage external customers. Prysmian Group’s main objectives were to support internal operations, transferring knowledge among plants and training plant personnel to support the development of new products.

Being in a leadership position also means leading the market, directing its decisions and choices,” explains Stefano Brandinali, Prysmian Group’s CDO & CIO.To maintain this leadership through time innovating becomes crucial. In our market sector, Digital Transformation means combining our physical products with a new intelligent and predictive digital layer, enhancing our offering portfolio with solutions enabled by new technologies. PG Connect well represents the objectives that we at Prysmian set for our digital products: to solve specific situations and to then become useful ecosystems for the whole organization”.

Prysmian selected Engineering and RealWear to co-design and develop PG Connect, a digital platform stemming from the harmonic combination of two parts: a software part based on the SPACE1 product developed by OverIT and integrated by the Engineering Group’s with a hardware part, the RealWear HMT-1 wearable device, that remotely connects field operators to customers, ensuring their efficiency, safety while reducing travel, thus increasing sustainability.

PG Connect is a new digital ecosystem that enables both operators and clients to live the same experience, simultaneously, even when hundreds of miles apart,” explained Carlotta Dainese, Head of Prysmian Group's Digital Innovation Lab. “PG Connect completely changes the way we work. It brings many benefits in terms of efficiency, as it accelerates technological transfer, and sustainability, because it reduces travelling. Lastly, it increases safety, being a hands-free device that is activated by voice commands”.

By leveraging SPACE1 AR capabilities using RealWear HMT-1, a Prysmian Presenter shares their point of view with external customers and displays the execution of testing activities on cable systems, in real time. Meanwhile, the Prysmian employee, identified as the “Expert”, operates in backend mode, supporting the Presenter with their expertise and making the most out of the combination of the Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence provided by SPACE1, to share documentation, multimedia content and knowledge, engaging the attending customers in a highly captivating presentation.
